Portraits

After watching the documentary on Richard Avedon, we tried our hands at shooting the same style of portraits he invented. Each portrait needed to have a white background, black and white filter, and a square frame. My partner and I photographed each other with different expressions and conveyed messages through our eyes. In the beginning, shooting was difficult because we had trouble letting down our defenses and showing our natural expressions, but as we continued on, we felt more comfortable to show our vulnerability.

  1. You did a good job of following the steps of Richard Avedon. I like how you captured different emotions however a couple of them seem a little staged. You used the black and white and the square frames well. The only thing I think you could work on is not creating a shadow. Good Work!

  6. Jessie,
you did a great job at capturing your models emotions. Each image has its own uniqueness and different emotion. One suggestion that i have is for you to not use flash for these photos. The shadows hinder the photos from replicating Avedon's style. Overall, good job!
